I’ve beed intrigued for awhile now about essential oils. I’ve been wanting to experiment with using them in homemade cleaning products, herbal remedies, and for aromatherapy, but I also just recently realized that people use essential oils for weight loss, too. I had no idea there were so many uses!

Essential Oils for Weight Loss

The use of essential oils for weight loss can be a great addition to an already in place weight loss program. Essential oils may help increase your mood, uplift your spirits, and detoxify your body. In addition, some essential oils have been found to increase circulation and dissolve fat deposits in the body. More importantly, though, some essential oils can be appetite suppressants when inhaled. The sense of smell is directly connected to areas of the brain that control and regulate feelings of fullness.

There are several oils that can be used alone or in combination to help curb your cravings between healthy meals.

Peppermint- Known as a digestive aid, peppermint can help calm your stomach and some evidence even suggests that peppermint oil may help relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and indigestion.

Lemon – This essential oil is know to boost metabolism, increase energy, speed up digestion, and detoxify the body.

Ginger - Used to soothe digestive upsets and nausea and aid in digestion.

Cinnamon - Aids in digestion and helps control blood sugar.

Grapefruit - Grapefruit essential oil has detoxify effects, is a diuretic (it’ll make you pee), and is a hunger suppressant.

How to use: These oils can be used alone or in combination either by rubbing topically on the skin (diluted), breathing through an aromatherapy mister, or taken internally (mixed in liquid).

doTERRA Slim and Sassy

If you’re looking to purchase essential oils for weight loss, you can find a blend of the above oils from doTERRA called Slim & Sassy. As a doTERRA blogger, I was sent a bottle of Slim & Sassy to try out for the month of April. If you know me in real life, than you know that I don’t need to lose weight. 10 months post-partum – I’ve lost all of my pregnancy weight and then some. I have an incredibly hard time keeping weight on while breastfeeding. The Slim & Sassy blend wouldn’t be an essential oil that I would purchase – but I did try it out for the sake of review. I’ll be passing it on to a friend. Not because it’s not good. It’s just that I don’t need it.

Slim & Sassy is a blend of ginger, lemon, cinnamon, grapefruit, and peppermint essential oils – all known to aid in weight loss either through helping with digestion or suppressing one’s appetite. All doTERRA essential oils are 100% pure CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils and are extracted using low heat steam distillation (in most cases). Slim & Sassy is safe to take internally (4 drops in 8 oz. of liquid), but can also be used topically (use a carrier oil such as olive or coconut), and aromatically (you can smell it straight from the bottle, add a few drops to a handkerchief, or use in a diffuser).

I do love the smell of Slim & Sassy – the peppermint definitely stands out to me, as well as the grapefruit. I wasn’t completely fond of the taste though. It’s definitely minty – and that’s just not my favorite. My lips definitely were tingling after! Was it do-able? Yes! If I was trying to lose weight, then I would totally drink Slim & Sassy. I think I might mix it into juice instead of water though. Since I didn’t take it regularly – I can’t really say how effective it was. I can say that I didn’t eat after breathing it in though! That could just be a coincidence but I really think that the essential oils curbed my appetite.

  1. I’d like to learn all the ways to use essential oils.

  2. Colleen Maurina says:

I use the Deep Blue blend of essential oils for my sore knee. I really like essential oils for many different uses!

  3. Michelle H. says:

I have used argan and neroli oils for my skin. But, I am interested in exploring the benefits of other oils.

  4. I have eucalyptus oil that I sometimes use in baths…I guess I’d like to learn how to use oils in different ways, other than just putting a few drops in bathwater!

  5. Karina H. says:

I love DoTerra oils. I’ve had great experiences with lavender to calm my 3 year old at night and during labor with my now 3 month old son, peppermint to reduce fever and indigestion, OnGuard saved us from getting sick during flu season and Oregano removed a wart much better and faster than anything over the counter.

  6. Anne Perry says:

I love lavender and Eucalyptus. I make my own vapor rub.

  7. Debbi Pesch says:

Hi, I’m allergic to lavender and Grapefruit. I’ve never had a problem with the actual plant of lavender so I don’t know if the oil will bother me. I’ve only gotten sneezy around scents like shampoo or candles or what not. I can use anything that has a grapefruit frangrance and I can even drink the juice but if the actual fresh fruit is even around me my throat starts to close up. I was wondering if these in oil form would bug me?

    • I’m not really sure! I’d suggest talking to your health provider before trying it. Good luck!

  8. I love doTerra Essentail Oils. My favorite is On Guard because it smells great and is best used to promote overall health!

  9. Ashley C says:

I’m new to essential oils, but I use lavender in my laundry soap! I also have a relaxed blend that I use in my kids rooms to help them sleep

I’ve never used essential oils before so i’m very interested in seeing what this can do for me!

  11. I love essential oil’s,just stated using OraMd on my teeth.I worked at a spa and used alot of oils. Love lemongrass and eucalyptus.

  12. I use peppermint oil for headaches. Still in baby stage in learning about essential oils!

  13. I haven’t had the chance to try doTERRA products but I am constantly hearing good things about their products. I’d love to try some oils that soothe and relax, release some stress.

  14. Melinda Dartmann says:

I love essential oils! Not only are they great for aromatherapy, but they are great for just about any health conditions!

  15. Laura E. says:

I’m fairly new to essential oils, but so far have had great success with doTerra’s digestzen blend when I had an upset stomach, and with the frankincense when I had a bad headache one day. I still have a whole lot to learn though!

  16. Even for younger people, today’s fast paced living leaves little time to work out or eat healthy. So many people have been turning to Pure Garcinia Cambogia, a clinically approved, all natural diet supplement made from an Asian fruit called Garcinia Cambogia. This amazing fruit contains natural weight loss properties by boosting your metabolism to the same levels you had when you were a youngster and helps reduce stubborn fat cells around your belly, thighs and waistline. The best part of Garcinia Cambogia weight loss is you don’t need to change your diet or daily routine, and there are no side effects whatsoever. Talk about the finest invention ever!

  17. I’ve been using the Slim and Sassy for about a week and a half. I add about 4 drops to a glass of water (with stevia to make it palatable). However, nowhere do I see a recommendation for how many drops of oil could be used safely in a day. I’ve read that essential oils can cause liver and kidney damage so I don’t want to go overboard. Anyone know?
