As many of you know, I’m an avid baby-wearer. I started wearing Grady when he was a newborn (and still wear him now) and now I wear Haley, too! I’ve tried a ton of types and brands of baby carriers, but I definitely have a favorite. My go to carrier is by far a ring sling. It’s the carrier I grab when Haley’s fussy, the carrier that gets shoved in the diaper bag on the way out the door, and there’s always one in the car. You can never have too many! They come in so many different colors that it’s impossible not to find one you like.
You’ll find tons of WAHM’s out there making ring slings and wraps. My new favorite is from a little shop called Uchi. Technically it’s not really a store, as you’ll only find them at St. Albert’s Farmer’s Market in Western Canada, but you can buy them online, too! Mariela, the owner and the woman who does all the sewing, sent me one of her Mayan Delight Ring Slings to try. It is absolutely gorgeous! One of the prettiest slings I own.
The fabric is nice and soft but durable (cotton/polyester blend). It kind of reminds me of a woven wrap but not as thick. It’s pretty lightweight and I’ve enjoyed wearing it this summer without getting too hot. She travels all the way from Canada to Mexico to get it! The rings are aluminum so they’re very sturdy and you don’t have to worry about them breaking or anything. The rings are sewn in a little different than my other slings which are pleated. This sling has the fabric gathered together so it creates a little bit more padding on your shoulder when you wear it. The sewing is very good quality. Nice and neat stitching that’s reinforced at the rings for added safety.
It’s very comfortable to wear although I find that the shoulder area is wider than my other slings, so I have a little less range of motion on my arm and the fabric tends to slide up on my neck occasionally. I’m pretty small though, so I think that it has a lot more to do with my size than the sling itself.
If you’re not familiar with wearing a ring sling, you’ll want to look over the directions that she includes with your purchase. They’re very easy to use, but it does take some practice to get it right. I won’t go into specifics because that warrants it’s own post! Her directions are straight forward and easy to follow, although I learned a little different. She threads the sling while having it on, and I like to pre-thread my sling before putting it on. Personal preference though! Either way works!
Do you baby-wear? Use a ring sling? She has so many to choose from. What’s your favorite?
BUY IT: You can purchase the Mayan Delight Ring Sling in a multitude of colors, like the one I reviewed, on the Uchi website for $75- $80. It is a Canadian shop, so if you’re in the US you’ll be paying shipping, too. Even so, it’s still a good price for a ring sling. She also makes some wraps, ponchos, and nursing covers!
Don’t forget to check out Uchi on Facebook to stay up to date on any new fabrics and sales!
