Even though Grady’s not in school yet, it’s fun to think up “after school snacks” for him to eat. For him, they’re technically, “after nap snacks” (ha!). It’s still the same concept and he doesn’t care or know the difference any way. Plus, it’s fun for me and I get a chance to be a little creative. We’re going to start having some mommy school time at home, so it’ll be fun to come up with little snacks and treats for him after he’s worked hard (hence #smartsnack)!
I had an idea in mind to use some fruit cups as part of a little dessert for him so we headed into Walmart to pick up a few things I needed. Back to School season is upon us and we were greeted by a huge display of Penn State treats for the upcoming football game and lots of Halloween candy. I can’t believe that stuff is out already! I better get working on Halloween costumes!
There were a ton of fruit cups to choose from, but we ultimately went with Del Monte. Even though they were a little more expensive than the Walmart brand, the packaging won us over. With better pictures and vibrant colors, they just stood out better on the shelf. I grabbed a pack of Diced Peaches with Cinnamon and Brown Sugar and a pack of Diced Pears with No Added Sugar. If you have school aged kids, these would make great healthy lunch or snack options. They come in so many varieties that you’re sure to find one your kid will love, plus they’re so transportable and easily fit in a lunch box. I love throwing one in the diaper bag! You can view more of my shopping trip in my google + album.
I decided to make some homemade whip cream to put on top of the fruit cups. Whip cream is so easy to make at home and so much better than the store bought stuff. You’ll never go back after making your own. Plus you get a little bit of an arm workout!
Treat your kids to a healthy after school snack of fruit topped with homemade whip cream.

That’s it! Can you believe it’s so easy? I can’t eat any myself since Haley has a dairy sensitivity and we’re breastfeeding, but Grady LOVED it. The cinnamon is perfect for fall, too! I just put a dollop on drained Del Monte Fruit Cups and it was a special snack for Grady and pretty healthy, too!
I also really enjoyed the Diced Peaches with Cinnamon and Brown Sugar mixed in to my oatmeal. Reminded me of the instant oatmeal packets but healthier!

Ohhh – good idea about the peaches in your oatmeal! And so much more flavorful than the fruit varieties too, I’m sure!
I LOVE making my own whipped cream. Except when I leave on the mixer and it turns to butter.
Looks great! I have to try making that whipped cream. Thanks so much for being a member of Social Fabric and doing such a great job on your posts.
