We haven’t used dryer sheets in our laundry in a long time. I would use them occasionally up until the time we started cloth diapering 2 years ago. They’re a no-no when you use cloth diapers (they can cause repelling) AND have some nasty cancer causing chemicals in them. I’ve known that dryer balls were an alternative option, but it took me until recently to give them a try. I’m not sure why I waited so long!

There are many companies and WAHM’s out there who make wool dryer balls, but I was especially drawn to Woolzies. I’m not sure if it’s the little sheep logo or just that they’re a down to earth wholesome family owned company, but I knew these were the dryer balls I wanted to try. And I’m so glad I did!

These wool dryer balls come in a set of 6 that are handmade by women in Nepal which helps to provide them with a steady source of income. You’ll notice that not all the balls are the same size and shape – because they’re made by hand and not by a machine. I think it gives it a nice personal touch.

Why should you give up dryer sheets and use wool dryer balls? Well, I’ll tell you why:

  • Dryer sheets can ruin your cloth diapers and cause repelling.
  • Dryer sheets and fabric softeners contain chemicals that can harm the environment and YOU. Here’s a great article listing the ingredients and their side effects.
  • Wool dryer balls cut down on the drying time of large loads by 25% and small loads by 35-40% saving you $$$ and energy.
  • You’ll save even more $$$ by not buying fabric softener or dryer sheets. A set of 6 balls will last you over a year (or about 500 loads).
  • You’ll have less static and wrinkles – dryer balls help to separate clothing as it dries.

The Woolzies have worked really great with our cloth diapers and regular laundry. I’ve noticed a significant difference in the time it takes to dry a load. Probably 25-3o% shorter. But the main difference that I’ve noticed is that our clothes are less wrinkled. Our laundry room is in the basement and I often forget about the laundry all day since it’s not right in my face. Our laundry is always wrinkled when it comes out of the dryer because it’s sat down there for so long. I either deal with it or run the dryer for 10 or so minutes to fluff it back up. Well, not any more! Even after sitting down in the dryer for hours, our clothes have less wrinkles than before. Isn’t that awesome!

All of our balls have stayed together perfectly. After a month or so of use they still look just like new, even after Grady’s gotten a hold of them. They sometimes catch a ride upstairs stuck in a sheet and Grady likes to play with them for awhile before throwing them down the stairs to the basement. He’s such a good helper!

BUY IT: You can purchase a box of 6 Woolzies, like the ones I reviewed, on the Woolzies website for $35.99. That’s a comparable price to others on the market.
